Conversation: Tending To Spiritual Health

“Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a huge crowd of witnesses to the life of faith, let us strip off every weight that slows us down, especially the sin that so easily trips us up. And let us run with endurance the race God has set before us.We do this by keeping our eyes on Jesus, the champion who initiates and perfects our faith. Because of the joy awaiting him, he endured the cross, disregarding its shame. Now he is seated in the place of honor beside God’s throne.” (Hebrews 12:1–2 NLT-SE)

There is a growing conversation about mental health. It is a good thing that mental health issues are getting high levels of attention. As we continue to understand more about mental health we are learning that mental health issues are closely related to spiritual health issues. While they are different they are definitely linked.

Spiritual health requires our attention and discipline. A key indicator of health is the ability to grow and progress. Spiritual health means we are moving forward and developing in our relationship with Jesus. Moving forward in this relationship is marked by ongoing change. Healthy change demands humility and honesty. Maintaining habits that foster humility and honesty will help assist us in being spiritually healthy.
